Digipak - Taylor Swift 1989

Taylor Swift's 1989 album was very much anticipated and had such a high demand, and I think the whole aesthetic behind her promotion for it and digipak played a good part. Below you can see the photos that made up Taylors digipak.

Front Cover

  • The red lip Taylor is wearing in this refers to one of her lyrics "I got that red lip classic thing, that you like"
  • The photo itself looks like a makeshift photo-shoot, it adds a personal touch.
  • The outfit Taylor is wearing is very casual, adding to the personal nature of the album, she isn't trying too hard with a fancy dress, she is being herself
  • I really like the handwriting both in the title, and her name

Inside photos (this was not the photo, the polaroids you can see were printed and put in the place of a regular photo)

  • Usually there's lyrics, or a plain photo on the inside photo, however Taylor took it up a notch on the personal theme and put a number of actual polaroids in the place of the usual.
  • On the space of each polaroid Taylor has written some lyrics from different songs that correspond to the photo, making the theme relevant to the album as well as the song lyrics - continuity.

The CD compartment

  • The birds suggest freedom, almost as in she is free in writing and telling her audience about her life

The back cover

  • The antique theme has followed through right until the end, the fact even the back cover is a polaroid shows extreme continuity which is something I'm a big fan of
  • The handwritten numbers add a more personal feel to the cover
  • The photo itself is simple, its actually the top part of the photo in the first cover which is an interesting and enticing touch

Overview

The entire digipak has a very antique feel to it, which is suitable as the album is named after the year Taylor was born in - 1989. This would be very attractive to her fans as the album suggests we may get to know a little bit more about her personal life, because the title is so personal.

The digipak itself stands out in a way not many others do, it looks old and 'hip' rather than new and bright, the faded colours give it the antique/mysterious effect and as a whole it looks interesting - especially as that style is coming back into fashion today, with polaroids and film cameras becoming popular again.

I really like how the digipak is based around snapshot memories in a polaroid, its something I think would fit in very well with my own digipak because my music video is based around memories. Another thing I think works well with this digipak is the handwriting, the font/words look handwritten which adds another personal feel to the album.

Overall, the digipak definitely attracts attention, and I personally really like it.
